That 90's Vibe!

Had an amazing collaboration shoot with model Thee Rah Rah and Ashlee Rose Photography.

I’m trying to keep my portfolio going in 2023 with different looks and genres. It's a great chance to get creative and showcase my skills. I thought I’ll start with the early 90's. A time which brings back so much great memories. And a time I would love to just teleport back to for a day! Just a day ! Thats all I ask!

When I think early 90's Black girl I think Box Braids, Red Lips and Gold!!!!! And a list of names come to mind: Queen Latifah, Dashiki ( character from Don't Be a Menace), Brandy, TLC, Janet Jackson (in her role in film Poetic justice) and 90's RnB girl group "Jade".

Moodboard:

Our model Thee rah rah is a 00's baby so we was giving a little history lesson during the shoot. I was showing her what the 'brick' mobile phones looked like back then. She was shocked to say the least.

For her makeup I felt I really captured the essence of a young 90's Black girl. I went for a darkened bushy natural looking brow, flawless skin and of course that classic red lip!

For the eyes i just used a natural brown eyeshadow with a simple eyeliner. Fast forward to now and it would be all about carved brows, cut crease, contour, the works.

The shoot got me thinking about how far makeup has come. There's so much representation for darker shades from makeup brands and bundles of creativity out there!!!

I really enjoyed doing this look because at that time I was far too young for red lips and door knocker earrings but was allowed to have box braids from around the age of 9!!!! Which I absolutely loved!!!

At first I wasn't sure whether to seal the ends of the box braids in hot water as we do now a days or to go full on 90's authentic with the burnt ends.

We opted for the burnt ends! One thing I'm glad for though, is that we had no choice but to stick to the latest kanekalon hair because I wasn’t about to deal with jumbo 50p hair that we had in the 90s. The hair was so thick and rough!

I'm so happy this shoot went well. Ashlee smashed it as always and Thee Rah Rah is an amazing model and a natural!!!

The Shoot gave me 'Word Up! ' Magazine vibes. It was an American teen magazine featuring the latest in entertainment and music. Its main focus was around African-American teen RnB and Hip- Hop artists.

This was one of my favourite magazines when I was younger. I was always excited to get the latest posters.

Seeing the outcome of the photos brought me right back to my old bedroom wall. Fantastic!
